Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)

Otoacoustic emissions (OAE)

The outer hair cell of the cochlea in the inner ear produces very faint, inaudible sounds known as octoacoustic emissions (OAE). When the inner ear’s hair cells are activated, they react by sending signals to the brain and sending a “echo” back to the outer ear. This “echo” is examined and recorded using the OAE test.OAEs are typically present in persons with a healthy or normally functioning cochlea, but they are not in patients who have mild conductive or cochlear hearing loss.It is mostly utilised as a screening tool for infants, newborns, and very young children who may have hearing loss.
